news in afghanistan. secretary of state john kerry is making an unannounced city of kabul after visiting iraq on sunday. andrea mitchell is traveling with the secretary. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. secretary kerry just arrived and, as you know, it was a difficult relationship with afghan's president karzai. officials on the plane say that kerry knows him well, has seen him five times -- has been to afghanistan five times as a senator and believes they can get past the difficulty, the friction of when karzai told the secretary of defense that he believes that america is conspiring with the taliban. they believe they can get past that. they know it will not be a smooth transition but they are here to work on all of those issues, the political and security issues. they are aware and supportive of karzai's statement that he is going to start working on talks

eventually with the taliban and eventually the state department officials say will be direct talks with the taliban as long as they have laid down their arms and they are not having links to al qaeda that includes the u.s. >> thank you. now here's matt. >> there are new developments in the amanda knox case this morning. italy's top court is meeting to decide whether to overturn the acquittal for the killing of her roommate. >> reporter: it has been six years since this case began. seattle student amanda knox spent four years in jail, convicted of the murder and then acquitted. despite being virtually no evidence against her, they want to overturn the acquittal and try amanda knox again. and the case continues again. amanda knox and her then boyfriend raffaele sollecito,

who is also convicted then acquitted of meredith kercher's murder to not have to appear in the court for the latest twist. since her release from prison in 2011. >> thank you for being there for me. >> has picked up her is studies in seattle, rebuilding her life with friends, family and a new boyfriend and a book soon to be published. prosecutors now want the court to set aside the acquittal by the appeals court can and try the case all over again. >> the only way the evidence could be characterized was absent, nonexistent, inconclusive and unreliable and revealed that a monumental wrongful conviction had occurred. >> reporter: what little dna evidence there was, the prosecutor said could tie amanda and raffaele sollecito to the murder were likely the result of contamination. still prosecutors are saying the judges who acquitted the pair made a mistake. >> they will be arguing that the evidence presented was

wed could weaken the institution of marriage. >> it is difficult for americans and our public policy and culture to emphasize the fact that mothers and fathers are necessary when the law says they are optional. >> reporter: an 83-year-old widow from new york is challenging another law, the defense of marriage act. it blocks federal recognition of same-sex couples in states where they are allowed to marry, denying them about 1,000 federal benefits that other married couples get. when her spouse died and left her the estate she got a bill from the irs for $363,000. >> i lost the love of my life and i was heart sick. and this incredible expense. >> reporter: after president obama declared the law unconstitutional, republicans came in though defend doma. the case comes in a different political climate than four years ago when prop 8 became law. an example, yesterday republican

we get his take on a lot of issues including mike mcqueary who was a star witness against him. >> i think there's a lot of things that transpired. you know, i think these investigators, the way they went about business, you know, his story changed a lot. i think he said some things, and then it escalated on him even. >> john zeigler conducted the documentary on joe paterno he's working on. good morning. >> thank you matt. >> you wrote an open letter to the media yesterday, a preemptive strike against what you think will be a lot of criticism coming your way because of these interviews and what you've come, or the conclusions you've come to. why did you write that letter? >>le with, i know the media really well, matt. i've devoted most of my career

to analyzing the media, and i personally believe the media in this particular case has an agenda they don't want to hear what the truth is. this has been a rush to judgment from the beginning and i know i'm going to get attacked from everybody. >> when you say this has been a rush to judgment from the very beginning after over a year of examining your case and your conversations with jerry sandusky in person and by phone do you believe he was wrongly convicted? >> well, jerry sandusky already had his day in court, but -- >> do you believe he was wrongly convicted? >> i've written extensively about this at our website. my focus is on joe paterno. >> i understand but it helps me with perspective in the interview. >> jerry sandusky had his day in court, joe paterno never did. i'm trying to get joe paterno his day. >> do you think jerry sandusky is a pedophile? >> i have no doubt jerry sandusky was guilty of many if not all of the things he was accused of.

i do believe there were due process problems with the file. >> your main problem with some of the evidence brought against jerry sandusky has to do with victim number two, the guy for our viewers so they remember, the guy mike mcqueary testified he saw in a shower with jerry $. the question of what happened came up in the courtroom. do you think mike mcqueary testified truthfully in the trial about the incident number two with jerry sandusky. >> depends on which version of his testimony you believe. i don't believe that mike mcqueary is lying. i think a large part is over ten years your memory changes and when a prosecution is desperate for a witness they might twist your arm a little bit and it's important to keep in mind they didn't have as much information about jerry sandusky in 2001 as we do now and i think as far as victim two is concerned that's the big news out of my interview. i know who victim two is, and his identity. >> let me interrupt, we've made the agreement because of nbc standards we are not going to

identify victim number two. >> i'm fine with that but there are important points about what victim two did the year of 2011 that shed entirely new light on that mcqueary episode. he publicly in his own name said the accusers of jerry sandusky are not to be believe and jerry sandusky has the greatest this ing that happened to him. he gave a police interview saying jerry sandusky never molested me and on the day joe paterno was fired this is an interview he gave to a former police officer saying nothing happened in the shower and mcqueary is lying and investigators got him to lie. >> the victim never testified against jerry sandusky so his credibility never directly impacted the trial. the jurors never heard from victim number two. >> that's what's quite remarkable. the entire case against joe paterno, that's why i'm doing the documentary the framing of

joe paterno, this is not a conspiracy theory i'm talking about and hopefully the larger documentary, this is all about joe paterno alleged's culpability which i don't believe the facts back up. >> go back to mike mcqueary, what would his motive have been to not tell the truth, did he want to be infamous and unemployed? that's how he ended up. >> the real sit i don't know that mike mcqueary is lying. we've focused on the wrong conversation. we've always focused on the mcqueary/paterno conversation. it w it was the sandusky/and tim curley situation. >> here is jerry sandusky talking about what is it or didn't happen in the shower with victim number two. let's play it.

here is a statement from the attorneys for victim number two released to nbc "jerry sandusky is a convicted child predator giving interviews from prison. our cleents, including victim two, have heard enough from jerry sandusky. er this focused on healing and holding penn state accountable for choosing to protect jerry sandusky and themselves instead of protecting children from years of horrific sexual abuse." >> i find it interesting they don't say anything what happened in the shower. i believe after reading this statement that victim two has not changed his story on what happened that incredibly important night from penn state and joe paterno's perspective.

i believe he changed his interpretation of the facts. by the way i think it's quite possible he was abused. i'm not saying he wasn't abused. i'm not saying he's lying. i'm saying he's telling the truth that november 9th, 2011, joe paterno was rail roaded here. >> you asked jerry sandusky if paterno had a suspicion you were a pedophile would he have let you coach two more years? here's what he said? the paer this know family released a statement to us sunday night through a lawyer. they feel it's important to make it clear they had no role in obtaining or releasing this recording. any attempt to use this recording as a defense of joe paterno is misguided and inappropriate. if his own family saying this, why are you sure your cause is a just cause? >> well that statement i found to be sad, heartbreaking for me, considering i put a year of my life into this with no

compensation, no thought of compensation, only wanted to do one thing which was to find out what the truth of this matter was, joe paterno's dying wish and i have done everything i could possibly do to try to find out the truth of this matter and i think we're much closer today because this is a three and a half hours of interviews i've done with the central figure in this story, how in the world you can possibly get to the truth of this matter without talking to the central figure on the record as i have done from the perspective -- >> keep in mind he had a chance to speak in court and chose not to testify. >> that's right. when people see the full three and a half hours if they look at the three and a half hours of my interview with jerry sandusky and they believe joe paterno was culpable here i will be stunned. i have done everything i can to get to the truth and i have also consulted with the paterno family sex crimes expert from before and after this interview and in fact asked questions based upon what he wanted me to ask sandusky. >> let's leave it at that. john ziegler appreciate your time. >> thank you, matt. let's get a check of the

we're back at 8:51 with new help for fathers facing parent hood alone after losing a spouse to cancer. cheer's dr. nancy snyderman. >> reporter: another normal day in raleigh, north carolina, for bruce hamm.

the father of three young girls is doing laundry, making waffles for breakfast. >> pretty good. >> reporter: and getting himself ready for work. but there's something missing from this picture that makes bruce's family a little different. >> it just wasn't registering when i went through it that she was going to die that quickly. i thought we had more time. and we just didn't. >> reporter: in 2010, bruce lost his wife, lisa, to cancer, after 16 years of marriage, and in that moment, bruce became a statistic, just like the estimated 20,000 other men who annually lose their wives to cancer and find themselves facing parent hood alone. >> cancer is certainly amongst the leading causes of early parental loss in this country and around the world. >> reporter: psychiatrist dr. donald rosenstein realized a need for these grieving families, he started a first of its kind monthly support group to help single fathers who lost

their wives to cancer. bruce was one of the first to join. >> when i heard about this group i thought you know, that's interesting to be in a room with folks similar to me. >> reporter: the journey hasn't been easy. >> the crying started the first night with the first person that opened his mouth, and i think it began to be a safe place for these macho guys that didn't share their feelings. >> reporter: soon men who started off as strangers became dear friends. >> definitely call these guys my friends, every one of them, yes, we've been through a lot together and we share a lot of pain together. >> reporter: these men are participating in a university of north carolina project to get the word out. they have launched a website called singlefathersduetocancer.org offering resources and support for fathers struggling to put the broken pieces of their lives back together. >> it has been particularly meaningful to watch these men pull themselves together over

>> we should say he's here to ring in the new season of "the voice" tonight on nbc. >> season four starts tonight. we have two new coaches, shakira and usher, prolific, both fit the model of what we're trying to do, have a-listers discover and develop people and not just judge them and make fun of them so it's the same old voice you've loved the previous seasons but they inject a whole new level. usher you see him in the red chair there, this guy, he found justin bieber, he really is the model. shakira i think america will quickly fall in love with if they haven't already. tonight's episode is two hours and the best two hours of "the voice" we've ever produced. it's really that dynamic. >> the thing that sets this show apart besides your -- >> thank you, al. >> you got the great coaches but it's really about the singers. it's not about the judges. >> none of us when they came in with the idea, america thought, nbc thought we were nuts to do another one of the singing competitions but the commonality

between myself as a producer and the coaches, let's be credible and try and help each other. that's all we have to do and the show has gotten rich in heart, it's a great family show to have on. >> even though i love the competitors and the people who show up, those judges and the fact that you put in shakira this time around i read an interview with blake who had a very interesting year, heartbreak within his own family, there for the kids and the show and he talked about shakira really being he thinks the wildcard, thinks she's going to bring it to a different level. >> oh she does. she's been somebody who, you know, independent her whole life, she does so much philanthropy, she's fantastic. she's a great artist and there's a lot of ceiling of discovery for her from america so i think as the show goes on you'll fall in love with her. >> blake also said they're still giving her crap, that was his words. >> the funny thing is blake couldn't understand her for the first two hours of shooting. i don't know about her, i like her but i don't know what the hell she's saying. >> some people can't understand

him. >> exactly. >> what's the pitch to these artists? these are a-list artists who are busy, have a lot going on in their lives. what do you come to shakira and usher and say why they should be doing that. >> usher is a great example. this would be a good problem when we started the show. we'd be lucky enough to go multiple seasons our coaches are not celebrity judges trying to revamp a career. >> they're touring artists. >> we've always known and treated it like "iron chefs" once you have the chair it's your chair for life and we'll pinch-hit but usher came into my radio show he's been probably asked to do any number of the shows and i sat down with him for a long time and really tried to express to him the fact of how credible we're trying to be in making a difference in people's lives on this show and this show is different, the talent level is through the roof, and he said i know. i watch the show, i love the show and i'm in. >> you unlock the door and let them out. >> that's right.

9:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update to breaking news in san jose where an amber alert is still in effect for a 1-year-old girl. police say gabriella quintero was inside of a 2006 white jeep liberty when it was stolen outside of a home on amador court not far from the intersection of story road and ja jackson avenue. officers say a hispanic female last seen driving away. california license plate number on your screen 6 bwk 440. if you have any information, call police or chp. in the meantime a richmond teenager fighting for his life after an overnight stabbing. the suspect who slashed him is still on the loose. investigators tell us the teen was stabbed on marina way and metro walkway at midnight. right now he's in critical condition at a nearby hospital. police tell us it's still too early to tell if that stabbing is gang related. so far investigators have not received any specific

restaurant who needed your son like nobody's business. >> i'm not allowed to tell this story on pain of death. but now that you've -- >> sorry, cody. >> oh, i was -- oh, hodie. let me see how i could. oh, he's asleep. okay. nobody wake up cody and tell him -- one of my dearest friends in the world is sam haskell, great friend but agent for 35 years. he was with william morris agency and now he's doing something with warner brothers. had dinner with him and cody and cass in the valley so, we had to get to hollywood to the valley. mistimed it by half an hour. i hate that. turns out there was a reason we were late. if we had been on time -- all of a sudden we're waiting for the check and all of a sudden cody looks over and goes, oh, my god, oh, my god. we all turn around. this heavy set elderly man is choking to death.

and his wife gets up and is behind him trying to give him the heimlich, which my mother calls the heineken. it's the heimlich. anyway, and so cody remembers that he'd been taught how to do it when he was in eighth grade. he says to the wife, may i perform the heimlich? she goes yes, yes, yes. english accent. so cody goes over, starts in on the man, at least 30 times. cody is 6'4". >> he's strong. >> strong as an ox. and all of a sudden whatever -- it was apple pie the man was eating. you think apple pie goes down easy. >> that one necessary. >> it's important because you know how most people, most people, if something is lodged and they are dying and seeing the pearly gates would be glad to get rid of something like that? >> oh, no. >> this is the thing about the elderly. they want their money's worth, if p you you know what i'm saying. the man chokes it up -- >> no, no, no, no.

was ready to kill him on the way there but not anymore. late, late, late. ready to kill him. at the end of the evening, wanted to give the man the -- >> the nobel prize. >> the nobel peace prize. it was cool. >> let me tell you one quick story. >> no. sorry. we're out of time. >> as usual. i was flying to florida this weekend so i got on the plane and they were de-icing the plane, and i was, like, they're taking a few extra minutes. >> makes me nervous. >> they say we have a security breach on this plane, we're parking it in the middle, everyone turn off your cell phones. we're sitting on this plane while no one is communicating pause they don't know what's going on. they wheel up a set of stairs, these cops and port authority guys get on the plane, go back to the back of the plane, grab three guys and take them off. they say there was some kind of a threat made to this plane, blah, blah, blah. now we're two hours on the ground. >> what a nightmare.

>> now they say we have to deplane everybody, do a sweep and take off the luggage off. you know who's on the plane to west palm beach. everybody is older, with walkers and canes, takes forever to get everybody off. just saying. >> and their apple pie. >> all the waiting made these young kids, i guess they were doing double shots of scotch, i don't know, but when we reboarded the plane, there was an older man here, an older woman and an empty seat. the drunk-looking empty seat guy decides he's going to get in that chair and he starts straddling the lady and i'm screaming to l ing ting to lois attendant, get him off the plane, because the door's still open. we're there now almost four hours. >> what do you mean straddle the la lady? >> like a drunk person. nobody loves me. >> he was going to find somebody to love him. >> they dragged him off the plane and it turned out the threat was either the ex-girlfriend or the wife of the man had called up and made the threat on the plane because her

joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon in for jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez. lets get right to that breaking news. an amber alert out of san jose is now in its fifth hour. a child has been missing since just before 7:00 this morning. nbc bay area's arturo live where this all started. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. there is still a solid police presence on amador court. pretty soon they are going to be moving their operation toss a mobile command center nearby. as you said, this did start just of a 6:30 this morning. as the hours pass, the concern grows with police, because the baby was in the suv when it was stolen. now, the police response was quick and intense. more than a dozen police cruisers clogged the small amador court. the more was loading up the jeep liberty going back and forth

from the house to the suv. when she went back into the house in one trip, someone jumped into the jeep and drove away. her daughter, 11-month-old gabriella quintero was in the vehicle. they immediately issued amber alert, alerted response, covert unit, planes took to the skies and officers operated a grid search. they describe the chaotic moments after the baby was taken. >> i was about to get up to go to work. i heard screaming. the mom was screaming hysterically in the morning. we all ran out. we thought maybe someone had tried to run away with the baby or something. >> we're hoping to get a lot of tips, a lot of information from the community. that's the whole purpose of an amber alert, the whole purpose for reaching out to the community in calls like this. >> now, the stolen vehicle is a white 2006 jeep liberty. it's an actual photo here of the suvt
